Visa & Arrival Guide: Getting to Your Retreat Stress-Free

You land in Colombo. The doors open, and the humidity hits you like a warm blanket. You are tired, jet-lagged, and just want to get to your yoga mat.
But first, you have to navigate one of the most unique airports in the world.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is an experience. It is the only airport where you can buy a refrigerator in the baggage claim area (really). It is also a place where a little bit of knowledge saves you a lot of money and stress.
Here is the realistic, step-by-step guide to clearing immigration, dodging the taxi sharks, and getting to your retreat without losing your Zen.

Step 1: The Visa (Do Not "Wing It")
In the past, you could land and get a "Visa on Arrival" easily. In 2025, the rules have tightened. While on-arrival facilities technically exist for some, they are often plagued by long queues or system outages.
The Golden Rule: Always get your ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) online before you fly.
The Scam Warning: If you Google "Sri Lanka Visa," the first three results are usually agency sites that charge you $80 for a $50 visa. Do not use them. The only official government website is: www.eta.gov.lk. It looks like a website from 1998, but it is the legitimate one.
- Cost: Approx. $50 USD (30-day tourist visa).
- Timing: Apply at least 3 days before your flight. You will get a confirmation email. Print it out.
Step 2: The "Washing Machine" Walk
After immigration, you enter the baggage claim. Don't be confused by the rows of washing machines, fridges, and TVs for sale. This is for returning Sri Lankan workers.
Grab your bag and head through customs. Now, the real game begins.
The SIM Card Pitstop: Right as you exit customs into the arrivals hall, you will see kiosks for Dialog and Mobitel. Stop here.
- Do not wait until you get to the beach.
- The Deal: For about $10 USD, you can get a "Tourist Pack" with 50GB+ of data. The staff will install it for you in 30 seconds. Sri Lanka has excellent 4G coverage, even in the jungle.

Step 3: The Great Taxi Debate
You have two main options to leave the airport.
Option A: The Official Counter (Easiest) In the arrivals hall, you will see a counter labeled "Airport Taxi."
- Pros: Fixed price, safe, air-conditioned vans.
- Cons: More expensive (approx. $50–$65 to the South Coast).
Option B: The App (Cheapest) Download the app PickMe (Sri Lanka’s version of Uber) before you land.
- Pros: Much cheaper. A ride to Galle might cost $35–$45 instead of $60.
- Cons: The app drivers are sometimes not allowed to park right at the arrivals curb. You might have to walk 5 minutes to the parking lot to find them.
- Uber: Uber also works, but PickMe usually has more drivers available.
The Scam to Avoid: As you walk out, random men will approach you saying, "Taxi? Taxi? Cheap price." Ignore them. They are touts. They will overcharge you or take you to a gem shop on the way. Stick to the app or the official counter.
Step 4: The Train Myth
Many budget travelers think, "I'll just take the train from the airport to Kandy/Galle."
The Reality: There is no train station at the airport. The nearest major station is Colombo Fort, which is 45–60 minutes away by taxi in heavy traffic.
- If you are going to the South Coast (Galle/Weligama): Do not take the train after a long flight. It is crowded and hot. Take a taxi directly via the Southern Expressway. It is a smooth, 2.5-hour drive on a modern highway.
- If you are going to Kandy/Ella: You must go to Colombo Fort station first. If your flight lands after 3 PM, you likely won't make the last express train. You will need to stay a night in Negombo (near the airport) or Colombo.

Step 5: Money Matters
Should I bring cash? Yes. Bring USD, EUR, or GBP (clean notes, no tears). There are currency exchange counters in the arrivals hall open 24/7. Their rates are actually quite competitive. Change about $50–$100 here for small expenses (coconuts, tips).
ATMs: There are ATMs in the arrival hall that accept Visa and Mastercard. Withdraw LKR (Rupees) immediately. You will need cash for the highway toll (if you take a taxi) and for tipping your driver.
Summary Checklist for Arrival
Visa: Printed ETA confirmation in hand.
Phone: Buy a Dialog or Mobitel SIM at the exit.
Cash: Withdraw/Exchange 10,000 LKR ($30) for immediate needs.
Transport: Book via PickMe or the Official Counter. Ignore the touts.
Water: Buy a bottle of water before you get in the car. It’s a humid ride!
